Sustainability

A sustainable and accessible stay on the Romney Marsh

We are incredibly passionate about sustainability. Whether it be through farming, producing our wool-based products, or during a stay within our shepherds huts – it’s at the heart of everything we do.

Through our sister business, Romney Marsh Wools, in 2022 we were officially accredited as ‘carbon neutral’ as part of our ongoing journey to reduce carbon emissions, become more sustainable, and build a better future for our planet. You could even say that it’s part of our DNA. Wool as a material is incredibly beneficial for the environment, with its bio-degradability and all-natural fibres, making it a good choice for the eco-conscious among us.

We already have a list of green policies and credentials listed on our website, which include our pledges such as supporting local, conserving the historic Romney Marsh pasture, having a minimal impact on the community, and creating products which are naturally processed, with no synthetic dyes or damaging chemicals.

Sheep have been grazing on this area of outstanding beauty since the 13th century, and each shepherds hut has been designed to ensure it is in keeping with the area. Created by a local craftsman Julian, together we were really sensitive to all of the materials we used.

Most of the products inside, too, are produced using the wool from our own sheep – including the bedding, curtains, throws, and toiletries, which are all produced with recyclable packaging. We also collaborate with local businesses who align with our sustainable promises, such as Biddenden Vineyards, Lost Sheep Coffee, and more.

We also have an electric car charger on-site.

We are also proud to be a member of Good Journey, which means that anyone arriving to us by foot or bicycle can receive either a free breakfast box, or 10% off any Romney Marsh Wools product. Simply quote GoodJourney10 to receive the discount off our products, or GoodJourneyBBOX to receive a locally sourced breakfast box, worth £15

Accessibility

Romney Marsh Shepherds Huts are located on our working family sheep farm in the Kent countryside, offering a peaceful rural escape surrounded by nature and open farmland.

As a rural farm setting, guests should be aware that access involves uneven ground, grass pathways and approximately five external steps into each hut. The huts are situated around 30 metres into the field from the parking area and surfaces may become soft or muddy during wet weather.

Whilst our huts are not wheelchair accessible, we always try to assist guests wherever possible and are very happy to discuss individual requirements before your stay to help determine whether the accommodation is suitable for you.

We are:

  • Guide Dog and Assistance Dog friendly year-round
  • Happy to provide additional arrival assistance if arranged in advance
  • Able to offer luggage wheelbarrows at each hut to help transport belongings
  • Located in a naturally quiet and low-lit rural setting which many guests find relaxing and restorative

Many guests particularly enjoy the opportunity to connect with nature, wildlife and seasonal farm life. During lambing season, guests may also have the opportunity to meet and feed lambs, creating a memorable and educational countryside experience.

As this is a working farm, guests may encounter sheep, livestock fencing, tractors and other agricultural activity during their stay.

If you have any questions regarding accessibility or would like to discuss your individual needs before booking, please do contact us directly — we are always happy to help and provide honest guidance about the suitability of the site.
